I believe Thoreau’s high-minded rhetoric when he explains why he decided to undertake his experiment in the simple life beside Walden Pond. He was a transcendental sort of fellow who wanted to get at the deep truths of human experience in an existential way. True enough, but I think there’s more to the story. Thoreau was also a writer and writers need, above all, something to write about. Read more »
