A Little Classic Hollywood for the Holidays, Part I

Thanks for dropping by during the holidays.  I’m feeling rather festive this week and not too inclined to fill a vat full of prose.  My guess is that–around this time of year, anyway–you’d rather watch movie trailers.  I’ve found six good ones for you.

Good?  No, wonderful . . . trust me, these are great movies.  I’ve chosen them for the course I’ll be teaching later this winter called What Makes a Story Great:  Learning About Fiction Writing from Classic Movies. (I wrote about it here.)  If you haven’t seen any or all of these movies, give yourself a belated Christmas present and see them.

Here are the first three: Sunset Boulevard, High Noon, and the original version of The Thing. I’ll show you the others on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, I got a couple of pros on TCM to introduce the first one:

  1. Isn’t it fascinating that even after all those years these films are still a joy to watch and remain great films, not ‘outdated’ great films.

  2. Your course sounds like fun, both for the students and for the teacher. Education at its best.
